Organization Development is a process of increasing organizational performance and facilitating change through the use of specific, behavior-based interventions. These interventions are comprised of structured activities that engage the relevant business unit to facilitate the desired improvement.
Typically, one of four conditions give rise to the need for OD interventions.
- Correct a Problem: When something appears “broken”, the business will engage OD to help diagnose the root cause and implement corrective actions.
- Capitalize on an Opportunity: When an untapped opportunity is discovered in the market / business unit, leadership will engage with OD to provide an enabling framework to help seize the opportunity.
- Re-establish Alignment – When elements of an organization are working at cross-purposes, business leaders will engage with OD to help the effected parties/groups get back “in sync”.
- Drive a New Vision – When it is realized that yesterday’s vision is no longer good enough to drive desired business results, the business will engage with OD to build necessary structures, processes and culture to support the new vision and help make it a reality.
Organization development requires a planned approach to change based on meeting the needs of both the people and the organization.
